Although he started drawing and painting at an early age it was not until after a life-time as a business man that creating pictures became the core of his existence. His life long dream of becoming a full-time artist came to fruition following an inspirational trip to Australia. From that time on travel has been focus on building experience and knowledge for painting. Trips to England, France, Italy, Spain, the United States and across Canada have contributed to his deep passion for painting on location and in the studio.
When I made the move from running my own business to becoming a full-time artist my goal was to become the best artist I could and see where it would lead me. For me it wasn’t retirement but challenging myself in art as if it was another career.
I am drawn particularly to figure work, portraits, and of course, painting on location...en plein air. It is such a sense of accomplishment when I see that I have created a good composition when using value, light and contrast in the design even if it might be carried out in the midst of chaos.
When drama and interest are created, it is very rewarding, encouraging and motivating. It is amazing how we can be inspired to paint whether it evolves from our imagination or from reality.
The choice of subject matter is endless and each day starts with a feeling of excitement of discovery and learning.
The Men In Hats are a group of painters, men and women, who have been gathering together for a number of years to paint outside "en plein air". We are artists at different stages of development and backgrounds and over the years our dedication has grown both to our art careers and to the group. We truly love what we do and want to build on this shared experience with other similar-minded artists who might also want to try painting outside…en plein air.
Trips to Europe, Australia and North America have contributed to David's deep passion for painting on location.
David paints and sketches the human figure from live models on a regular basis both in study and in preparation for finished work.
David can be found each day in his studio completing works and experimenting with new concepts, styles, paints and techniques.
